Stevenage – it featured in the film “Boston Kickout” – and didn’t come out of it very well. The Town Centre is full of Chavs. Beer bellied Dads(and Mums) all a-jangle with Elizabeth Duke, screaming at Bailey, Paris and Keisha while waving their Lambert and Butlers.
Scaring the shit out of the local wrinkly population while running round on motorised scooters, giving their mates a good kicking (“Bi’ of a larf, innit?”) hanging round bus stops and local shops making a bloody nuisance of themselves and skiving off school are the hobbies of the teen chavs.
At the weekend young chavs go to the Plaza or Leisure Park for a booze-up and fight night. Having a piss on the nearby station platform is a favourite pastime as they wait in drink sodden lethargy for their train home if they live out of town. Pools of vomit and urine greet commuters on Monday morning.
Stevenage – our motto is “The Heart of a Town Lies in Its People” – well, it doesn’t say much for the people here. Chavs 70%, “Normals” 20%!
The interaction was postulated to be due to the increased metabolism of cyclosporine, since no other factor expected to affect the disposition of the drug had changed. ,

Stevenage is one of those great ideas that missed the obvious. In post war socialist sympathetic Europe something had to be done with the homeless poor of london and brave new world developments which highlighetd the efficiancy of central planning were required. Accross Europe the result were some of the worst social housing ever. In the uk there was a move away from patternalisim of letchworth and wellyn and a brife fling with stalinisim that produced newtown stevenge. There were some great idesas here, the town was build like it or not with the intrests of inhabitabts in mind, ( unlike more recent attempts where the concern ids to maximise profit to the developer.) Sadly the developers forgot that in a capitalist society you also need cash and the town was devoid of a middel class area. in the absence of middle imcome housing there was no cash and when the manufacturing industrydied what was left was unremitting poverty in some very good housing. given that the people there came from a long line of poverty that it has done as well as it has is surprising.
the people here are working and sub working class for several generations they are the displaced aristocracy of the east end. this however is changing. the town now has increased its numbers and increased its percapita income mostly through london commuters and interms of education through its immigrants. If allowed Stevenage may be about to change.
What it lacks is leadership. Its controled by the town aristocracy who live out of town. And they dont want it to be anything other than a convienient place to do the weekly supermarket run and a source of cheap labour with “just enough” education. tellingly the “labour” council Supply for free the rabidly lowbrow and right wing commet 24 to residents. In response to the update – no one interested in art reads it. There is significatn ART and crafts interest in the town – the council fails spectacularly to engage it. Evidently not enough people studying at goldsmiths – or whose parents are in the dinner party set.
The tory response to the area is send the tean agers on mine clearence duty in afganistan, the labour to encourage whitecollar jobs ( call centres to replace warehouse work),
The people living in the town are heartily skeptical and wish the politicians would just go away and stop carving the town up on national guidelines and draining resources.
Income is low here but so is crime on a per capita basis and educational attainment again on a national standard is improving rapidly. What parties fear here more than anything is local support for something they dont control.
On a prcatical level – Stevenage train station and the leisure park have been drastically cleaned up, Largly through consistant occasionally heavy handed policing. The trouble here from underage teen queens and testosterone fueled drunks have been largly disspersed. Your safer here on a Friday night than in most parts of London.
