I go to school in ”berko” and what an interesting place to go to school. Berko has several private schools and a few normal schools – the Collegiate, Egerton Rothsay, Ashlyns, Thomas Coram, Bogwater etc. Unfortunately for me, my parents chose to school me in Berko.
Chavs are swinging from the lamp posts in that town. A typical day in Berko means getting jumped atleast 3 times, getting shattered glass sprayed at you from underage chavs and chavettes who are drinking on the street next to the Sports Centre and finally, when you thought it was all over, you get jumped again.
The George is a favourite pub of the girls in my year and of course I get to hear about all the exciting fights between one chav and another in that pub from some girls in my tech class QUOTE ” yeh, an’ Bart was li’e goin for ‘im, Oi, ya John, ya listnin? Yeh well Pete wa’ all li’e..” I cannot bear to go on.
If you want teenage pregnancy, screeching chavettes and keved up cars go to Berko or a neighbouring town such as Chesham, Hemel or Tring
Far from it. This is not Berkos. Berkos is fine, but remeber, you will always atract what you are not what you want. If you expect to find rude people, you will even if you visit the Queen.
I grew up in Berkhamsted until I was 18. I lived just up the road from the sports centre next to an area of pre-council owned housing and for me it was a great place to grow up. There are parks and public spaces, sports facilities and a good selection of shops, pubs & restaurants all within walking/cycling distance. I went to Berkhamsted school which I enjoyed for the most part (there were alot of arrogant idiots there) as I tended to be mates with the normal & down to earth people.
When I was younger I thought there were a few problems with slightly chavy people but the majority of it was kids being kids/ boys will be boys which you would get anywhere. As far as I can see, having been back there frequently to see old mates is that there are more facilities than there were when I was growing up which can only be a good thing!
When I started going out in Berkhamsted to the pubs etc there was another side to the town….. If you stick to certain pubs you will have a good evening with no hassle what so ever. If you go to the rougher pubs that attract the more chavy people then you will see worse behaviour! Having been to all of the pubs in Berkhamsted I have a very good idea about what each has to offer and for me I ended up staying away from The George, The Lamb & The Crystal Palace because I found there was more trouble in them than other pubs. As much as I liked and made the most of the later opening hours it has definitely effected the amount of trouble that happens on the high street when everyone is chucked out. On Fri & Sat nights there was always a small police presence but it has become more visible in the last 5 years. The main problem is drunk, loud people, if anything else happens it is definitely not common.
I think out of the surrounding area Berkhamsted is one of the best towns, you only have to look at house prices to see it is a sought after place to live.
I came across this site as I am looking to buy my first house and Google brought me here. I would consider Berkhamsted as a place to buy but with my job location and salary it’s not possible, yet! Do not be put off from Berkhamsted by the very few misguided and grumpy people commenting on this site. It’s a great place to live.
Wake up, are you sure you’re not talking about Hemel?

you obviously havnt been to the ‘yacht club’ aka the boat!
Sorry but as an Ashlyns Student I can say this is not even remotely true!!
Berkhamsted is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and with one of the lowest crime rates. The people in Berko are largely middle class and often overtly ‘posh’ or old.
And whilst Ashlyns does have it’s issues, its sense of community and integrity amongst the pupils is unmatched.
Berko isn’t bad, yeah there are problems but there are problems anywhere you go. The private schools are worse because they think they rule the world when they go down town. One of the problems is that there arn’t enough places where teens can go and hang out without being bothered so, we have to make our own ammusment. There are places we can go but its all full of little kids and little kids things. Like the other week there was a fair and there was ‘ment’ to be rides for teens and adults. It was rubbish time because it was full of little kids bouncy castles and merry-go rounds! We NEED more places to go out in the evenings! I know people say that Jarman park and Berko High Street is the most dangerous places in herts, but have they ever been down town at night on their own? Probably not, and to be honst its not that bad. Plus the schools are good and there are plenty of sports clubs to join. So its not all that bad!
to the most recent commenter what year are you in currently in? i also go to ashlyns in the sixth form and was just curious
I absolutely adore Berkhamsted, i’m currently a student at ashlyns and i can think of no better place to grow up. If you think theres chav’s in berko its obvious you’ve never managed to get on a train and go to london. For an alternative to living inner-city, i can think of no better place. It’s half an hour from the capital with good schools and it’s not just full of upper class assholes as some people seem to think, if you decide to go to ashlyns (like i do) you’ll find a diverse range of classes all of whom get on with each other and apart from the occasional childish fight(which lets be honest, happens everywhere) theres no trouble at all. Mostly berko is full of adorable old racists and people attempting to raise a family. what more could you want…?
what are you talkin about mate ? yes berkhamsted has got chavs but not as much as luton, hemel etc, your a posh posh who lives in a mansoin in berkhamsted and never comes to town,
(1) get a life and go out more
(2) open your eyes, CHAVS are much more polite and nicer than you posh pricks
(3) get the f**k out ?
(4) dont post bulls**t like this, there a few chavs not alot at all.
thank you for your time
MR G
my nana and grandad live in berko , i used to go up there when i was below 14 yrs old , tbh its the s**test place ive ever been to its f**king boring as f**k , can someone plz tell me something to do apart from watch pussys think they are hard smoking weed in wilston -.-
I lived in Berkhamsted during the 90s and have passed through quite a few times since then. While incredibly safe (apart from drunken drivers – why do so many people who live out in the country think it’s OK to get pissed and then drive home? Oafs) it’s probably the least friendly town I have ever been in. I lived there for four years, and people in the local shops still wouldn’t say hello. And it wasn’t for want of trying – I’m reasonably presentable. I understood, eventually, that this village – remember that the only industry here is private education – is an insular, racist, narrow-minded, ignorant, bigoted collection of people who work in London *because they have to* but appreciate nothing of the capital but the train home from it. There are exceptions, of course, and I knew some really nice people, but it felt to me as though most people in Berko hate anyone who isn’t exactly like them.
Oh, and it’s the only place I ever had my vehicle vandalised, as well: I believe because it was a fairly ugly van rather than a new Mercedes. Berkhamsted really wasn’t a tolerant place then: it may have improved by now.
Luke is right about the racist bit. We know it’s gone a bit nasty in the last few years which is so sad to see. Berkhamsted used to be a lovely area in the 90′s but has gone downhill quite a bit in the last decade in my opinion and I live here. The pubs are now full of chavs; drive down the high street on any Friday or Saturday night to witness them. After 16 years (the first 10 more happy than the last 6) we are now looking to move to Nascot Wood, Cassiobury, or the conservation area in St Albans as frankly both St Albans and Watford have better schools, better theatre, better leisure facilities and more things to do for our children. Also these three specific areas have just one or two old fashioned neighbourhood pubs in them, rather than the highstreet scummery we have here.
haha was there a chav holocaust? i have lived in Berkhamsted for 3 years, i used to live in Harrow. Berkhamsted is probably the safest place in the U.K. Berkhamsted is full of Middle/ Upper Class people, most of whom are scared of ethnic minorities because they never go outside Berkhamsted, as a result everyone is a little bit racist, that is the only bad thing about Berkhamsted oh and the fact that there is f**k all to do for anyone between the age of 13 – 30.
What on earth are you talking about? I can only imagine that this is someone with a serious chip on their shoulder…. Berkhamsted is one of the safest, least chavvy places you could wish to find. A straw poll of people on the street would completely support that. The George isn’t the classiest place in town, but its nothing like your portray either. And if you don’t like it, go to one of the heaps of other, better venues. Visitors to the town will soon realise that this isn’t representative at all.
What a load of nonsense. I have lived in Berkhamsted for 28 years. There are NO chavs in Berkhamsted. There are young people behaving like young people. The George does seem to allow a younger crowd however this is a friendly pub where everyone is welcome and there is NEVER trouble in the george. Berkhamsted is a SAFE town and is wonderful if you like walking, good food. Unfortunately the comments made on this site seem to be biggotted and closed minded with a complete over-generalising and attacking genre. Of which everyone is a victim. If you visit berkhamsted you will not get any trouble unless you are looking for it. If you treat people with respect this is how you will be treated. RESPECT is the only way to be the so called CHAVS. Victimising behaviour creates CHAVS
that is all hogwash. berkhamsted is so safe. i have been to gigs in amersham where you get a load of chavs to beat the crap out of you. then the ones in berko ethier go have fun. or come talk to us because they are friendly. yeah we get a few fights and few dicks but they rarely will start fights. i go to ashlyns and it isnt a bad school yeah theres some anger agaisnt the boyschool people. i also went to “bogwater” but that wasnt as s**t as “toilet cleaners”. and as for the chrystal palace its a good pub and thats hardly any chav its all old men i drink there often because and im one of the few young people and there is hardly any fights. i have only seen two in a year. the george is a dive i admit. but berkhamsted is not a chav town. hemel watford chesham harrow aylesbury lets face it berkhamsted is a cool town
