Margate is a nasty little shithole on the tip of kent, like a fat spot on englands arse. But as if Margate’s bad enough, its connected to loads of surrounding towns (thanet) that are just as bad, so imagine a city the size of birmingham with nothing except council estates, a shut down themepark (dreamland) and a few polluted beaches. Westgate is one of Margate City’s suburbs…
Westgate used to be a nice quiet little town that people retired to from london, but its recently been invaded by chavs, yes, recently. When a skate park was built to the delight of local goths and skaters, an army of 16 year old wannabe gangsters turned up and tried to burn it down (they would have suceeded if they knew more about pyrotechnics than spraying lynx on it). Bear in mind this is only a small suburb, but now every corner has little chav kids (5-16 yrs old) hanging about asking you to buy them fags or for a fight. The goths i kids i used to talk to have started wearing caps and gold since i went to uni, even the old retired folk are getting lairy.
The weird thing is where the chavs my age (21) get the cash to kit up their cars, and there are nice cars about, in an area where the average wage is about 8000 (no shit!). Margate is a weird little town, in a weird little area called thanet (planet fanet to the locals). The chavs have codes like wearing their hats at different angles to show how hard they are, or if they’re ramsgate crew, or margate boys etc. Its funny as anything until they start on u as they want ‘practice’. I aint saying anything about that, because for some reason kids mutate if they choose to be chavs and they’re all bigger but younger than me
Margate is 10 years behind everywhere else, and adult chavs are only now popping up. Ali G is getting popular, and people still have dodge viper stripes on nova’s, so visit margate like a museum to see how chavism started. Westgate on sea is more of a zoo, where you can laugh at the little bastards while they stole about scratching their arses and eating off the floor. dont let them climb on your car though, they’ll have the wipers
I have just visited Thanet with my family and have to disagree with most of the above article! We stayed in Westgate on Sea and I din’t see the chavs that you mention ( in 2012 ). The bays and beaches are wonderful and in general not commercialised at all. Maybe Margate needs more regeneration but I am sure that will come in time. The area felt safe and chilled out and with the fantasticly cheap house prices I would be maore than happy to move to the area from the overpriced dump that is St Albans ( where I live ).
I completely agree with you I have lived in margate my whole life and it is the worse place I have ever been to, I have recently been mugged six times this year alone and just last week I refused to buy some 14 – 17 year old chaves some smokes and alcohol so they thought it would be a smart idea to hit me in the ribs with a bat and break two of my ribs in the process this kind of thing has been happening to me since I was 15 and just keeps getting worse and worse as the years pass by.

I have lived in Westgate all my life, And I object to you saying Westgate is a suburb of Margate! coz its NOT, The Council would like it to be. but its not.
When the council get their heads out of the sand and get Dreamland (not part but the full size park) running then We might stand a chance, all areas suffer with kids hanging on street corners and chav -yobish behaviour,

Hmmn.. It’s not as bad as you make out. I live in westgate and I haven’t seen all that many chavs around – not much more than anywhere else anyway. Although I did notice the goths I used to see when I was growing up rapidly disappear quite a while ago. But like I said, it’s mainly old people and a lot of the chavs that hang out by the station don’t actually live in westgate at all.
I also happen to live right opposite the offending council estate and the most and worst of the chavs have 1. grown out of that silly stage where they would throw things at the door and 2. would swear and make inappropriate comments at worst – so hardly anything threatening anyway. So they were just silly, childish pests more than anything else
Margate on the other hand, although does have some problems – has a lovely area by the the turner centre called ‘the old town’ and the most delightful bar at the end of the harbour arm called the ‘lighthouse bar’.
The beaches are also some of the best in the south east of england as well. So I’m sure I speak for the rest of the ‘planet fanet’ martians when I say I’d appreciate it if you would hold off your slander until you get a more educated view of the places you’re dismissing as ‘weird little towns’.

Correct…Margate is a bit of a dump but work is being done to improve it. Westgate still is a lovely area and you will find youths in every single town you visit where a minority do cause a bit of trouble. Name one town that doesn’t!? On the note of the beaches in Thanet, Botany Bay has been named one of the best beaches in the country with the some of the least polluted waters so those ‘facts’ you have written aren’t exactly straight.

i think that the reason for all the chav infestation in westgate is because the fuckin shitty council. The skatepark was good for a while and kept people from smashing things and beatin each other up till it started sinkin into the fuckin ground coz the lazy bastards hadnt done it right. ive seen so many good skaters waste there talent coz they banned us from the street spots like west bay. The trouble for the council is the chavs and the reason chavs are there is coz of the council. Just shows how shit and dumb the majority of thanet really are.
