The REAL Royston Vasey.
This collection of pit villages and bus shelters combines the desolation, hopelessness and black comedy of that fabled town on the moors.
You MUST be ‘Local’ to fit in.
For the Local Shop – go no further than ASDA.
This is the ubiquitous ‘Trading Post’ seen in wild west movies. Except instead of having to negotiate Indians, bandits and bank robbers you must try and get through a front entrance clogged with Coffin Dodgers, Charvers and poor f**kers in wheelchairs with that f**king bastard trolley thing clamped to the front. In short, a cloying, smelly, depressing Hell on Earth.
The charvers are so plentiful, spiteful and evil that they remind you of Orcs and Goblins from Middle Earth. Instead of fighting over carrion, they squabble over Lambrini and ‘Tabs’
STANLEY HAS NO REDEEMING FEATURES AT ALL.
It is the fluff down the bum crack of the North East. Stanley is the fly in the ointment of some of the most wonderful countryside in England and the best thing to do is avoid the f**king place. Even Consett has more going for it than this midden.
The highlight in the existence of the poor non-Orcs in this town is the contruction of a bus station.
I have read some of the comments on here and so decided to leave my own. i was born here and moved to London 20+ years ago but came back 3 years ago and yes there is not much for the kids but i have seen the same around the London areas. Now for the Irish gentleman “angelaer” i have a message for you if Stanley is such a s**t place and its worse than Belfast then why dont you f**k off back there, as for all the women and men who smell of dirt and piss, too lazy to wash themselves maybe you should step back and see who you ascoiate with cos there is a small number of dirty people hyere but no different to London or BELFAST and yes ive been there and you should take note of your own town before slagging off this one and for everyone one else who moans about the town if its that bad why you still here and dont say its because there is no where else to go, I have travelled all over this country and there is the same type of people all over only difference is they all talk different accents. so why dont all you whingers find something else to do or better still get off your arses and start cleaning the town up so your leading by example not sitting there waiting moaning and waiting for someone else to start f**king HIPPOCRATES
Hi, I was born & brought up there in the 50s & early 60s. I agree totally with what Kevin Reay says. I can’t really comment,on how it is now though. But I would imagine, like a lot of areas where the mines were closed, and not replace with any other work,it must be a bit depressing. If that’s the right word.
I have lived in stanley all of my life and find it heartbreaking that the town has fallen by the wayside. The town council has done nothing to lift this place out of the hole it’s fallen into while allowing funding to be directed into Consett. There is no pride taken from residents for the external appearance of their homes and people commute to other areas to work never stepping foot into the town centre. Which leaves the main street full of people who can’t or won’t work spending no money to sustain any decent businesses that would boost the local economy and make Stanley a nice place to live. Take some pride!
just came across this site and thought i would leave a comment i have grew up in stanley and was born here and yes it may need funding and some certain people to get off their arses but other people such as myself are trying to find jobs and for people like angelaerr if your not happy living here stop complaining and move back to where your from so you get realistic not every one is a lazy s**t most people are decent dont need people like you complaining when your not even from round here so a think we both know what you need to do…………
I moved to stanley 6 years ago from Belfast NI, everyone knows what its like in Belfast, guns, bombs, murders etc….but i swear, id rather live in a warzone, than live in this godforsaken hole, its grey, boring, has nothing for kids, all the inhabitants are alcoholics or scag heads, the women live to serve their lazy dirty husbands who never get off their arses, they complain about immigrants coming taking their jobs, but really if they got up off their arses and worked there would be no need for immigrants taking jobs…ive never seen dirt like it in my life, grown women and men smell of dirt and piss, too lazy to wash themselves…its a dump, a hole, a hovel…it should be wiped out and the people with it. Anyone who says its a great place to live is LYING.
Who is the nasty piece of work that kicked off this discussion in the first place? ‘Admin’? The coward can’t even say who they actually are. Needless to say, I was born and bread in the Stanley area and through sheer loyalty – I think it’s great!
its not great, wise up and be realistic.
@Stephen South Moor went downhill when a housing assoc. bought a load of the houses and moved folk into them from all over the North East including Meadow Well & Newcastle – as far as I know this was to diffuse “situations” where they lived – that’s what I was told anyway.
I’ve lived in a few places inc London and I would happily stay in Stanley because everything is so damned handy 20 mins and you’re in the moors, at the coast or in the city. All it needs is the financial input other places have had and job creation funding and it could thrive again.
Michelle, I have lived in one of the housing association houses since 1990 and all of the people who moved into the refurbished homes were local residents who were pleased to move from unheated/outside toilets houses into warm comfortable homes. None of the homes went to people from outside the area!!!! Prospective tenants are vetted before getting the keys.
Hi, I am from Rome Italy, I have worked as a volunteer in the Stanley Youth Centre for a decade during my summer holiday and I got to say that Stanley is a lovely calm place with lots af friendly people and a pure countryside. I spent there some of my very best period in my life. Thanks to all my friends in Stanley
What’s your full name ? I went to burnside school as well in the 70s & 80s. I have many happy memories of that time.
i live in south stanley at the moment but i have lived in catchgate as well. i don’t mind living in stanley, as i have lived in worse places! for example, sheffield and sacriston!!!!!!! anyone who says it is a s**t place to live obviously dont actually live here!
It’s hardly that bad. I live here born here grew up here . Yes there is a few undesirables but no worse than anywhere else. I have my own business and know lots of lovely people . Does that make me scum??? Just because you are obviously a moron who has no Job or anything better to do than post nasty comments on a place that you obviously live in… If you’re not happy then live somewhere else !!!!!it may not be the best but I grew up happy here with lots of fantastic memories of the place !!!
WELL SAID
I grew up in Stanley in the 60s/70s and it was a great place to be a kid. Endless woodlands and fields to play in, an Olympic sized swimming pool, a sports centre, youth clubs, a cinema, and all of it was affordable even to the very poorest. I can honestly say I was never bored. There was always plenty to occupy us (and some of it involved getting onto trouble like most kids) Things changed when they started shutting down the pits and the factories. Once you got loads of people on the dole the whole demograph changed. Successive generations have had nothing to look forward to except getting out of the place. There are no jobs to be had, and no hope for the future. Despite this the place shows a remarkable resilience. The people are not the “charva scum” they are painted as. I’d live there in a heartbeat if I could get work in the area as it is outstanding, really beautiful in parts. A ten minute walk from the front street takes you into wonderful countryside, and you can walk along the old railway track to Beamish in an hour or so. It has its bad points (very violent at times) but the good far outweighs the bad.
I live in stanley, and there isnt anywere else a would rather live, its full of lovely people me included hahahaha, a wouldnt leave it for the world, and all you that slag it off are just a total waste of oxygen and shud of been drowned at birth……..THIS IS ALL THANKS
I moved away from there many years and now live in London. I was raised in South Stanley in the 70s and 80s and attended Burnside School. As a kid it was a brilliant place to grow up, so much great countryside to roam around in and and seemingly hundreds of other kids on the streets to play football or ‘Block’ with. I think my childhood probably wasnt much different to that of my Grandfather and I pity the children raised in London by comparison. Im not sure what its like to grow up there now tho, the decline over the past 20 years is staggering. South Moor in particular. Back then it was a thriving little community, incredibly friendly and you had the sense it hadnt really changed too much over the 20th century. Now it feels more like the once troubled West End of Newcastle or dare I say it the Meadow Well estate in Tyneside. Its an incredible transition and heartbreaking for the older generation who have bore witness to it and live there still. I’ve lived all over the UK and many places are actually worse than Stanley and have far less character. I hate to hear it cheaply denegrated, as there is a real tragedy at the core of this decline. The North East is a wonderful region and needs support now more than ever and it wont no longer come from Westminster, so has to be self generated.
