Gravesend, Otherwise known as the armpit of kent
I Have lived in gravesend all my life
i have visited many other ‘Chavtowns’ across kent like lewisham dartford chatham and so on
And not one so far has even came near to being as chav infested as Gravesend
Being stereotyped as a ‘Goth’ Or ‘Emo’ it kinda sucks for my people down here.
im a 15 year old girl and have on more than one occasion have been threatened by a massive group of chavs brandishing metal poles, knives and planks of wood with nails stick out of them, and demanding that us ‘F**king dirty grungers’ govfe them our money, phones and so on.
It isnt nice.
I mean we believe that Safety in numbers is our best way of surviving, but however this is not the case anymore.
as even in large groups of 40 (yes thats quite a few freaks) we can still be belittled by 3 or 4 chavs.
I mean all we do is sit on a patch of grass in the local church Graveyard (not good for the stereotype i know) and chat, smoke and have fun.
They are just scum
No one can even walk about Gravesend town centre without getting threatened, spat at and so on.
Some people i know, some of the most docile humane lovely people i know have had to start taking knives out with them to protect themselves if the worst should happened.
and even worse Boy Chavs Threaten to hit GIRLS
To actually smack their face in with glass bottles
so yes I think Gravesend is one of the most chav filled, disgustingly stereotypical town you will EVER find.
i go to skl in gravesend, there are some nice people, youve just got to look hard. real hard. yeah, its mostly full of chavs and pikeys, but there are some good points, like, well, ummm….. the swimming pool? nope, thats shit like most of gravesend.
I just want to add my two cents, by saying that I have lived in Gravesend for a total of 2.5 years and it has been a pretty bad experiences.
What my wife and I have noticed is, that when an area has a low standard of education and poverty, the result is the people that live in Gravesend. What I mean is that people don’t know how to behave socially, are overweight/obese, have no values, they cannot spell (just looking at the replies on this thread) and they cannot communicate without being offensive.
The list is longer, but I don’t want to be mean.
But don’t get me wrong, there are some really nice people in Gravesend that have not grown up there, but have decided to settle because it’s cheap and is 25 mins on the High Speed Train into King’s Cross.
I most likely will never live in Gravesend again, but it’s a shame that the few spoil it for everyone else. If people had bigger balls to standup to the “chav’s/pikeys/gypsys etc” population then there might be hope. It could be a lovely town otherwise and maybe it will in the future (I hope).

I have to add I think Gravesend is nice place ever time I have been there on personal level I found ever body friendly and nice I had great time ever single time I have been there and come up form Chatham now that what you would call a depressing dump
I was born, I live and I work with teenagers in Gravesend….problems are everywhere not just here, I am 42 years old 5’2 and have walked my dog through Kings farm past midnight and YES there where a group of what other people I would assume would say looked threatening but to be totally honest ,I smiled I did not avoid them or cross the road, then I said good evening and everyone of them said hello and a few asked if they could stroke my dog. They where all very pleasant and at no point did I feel threatened. Don’t make the age old mistake of judging a book by its cover, so what they all have hoodies and grunt loads but this does not mean they are wielding knives and ready to mug you. A rough exteriors often conceals diamonds and I know for a fact that some of the more troublesome teenagers have very good reason to be this way and if you spent a day in there lives I’m sure you would understand why…..have a look at the lack of any kind of evidence of parenting skills or just they have not experienced love and trust…what do you expect. Give these kids a chance and you may well be surprised, they are not all perfect but then no body is!!!

If you look for trouble you will get it anywhere doesn’t matter how nice the area is.

If you think this place is bad visit Hackney and Brixton you want trouble you will get it there
Having lived in both Gravesend and Hackney, I can safely say that Gravesend definitely has the upper hand in edginess and the likelihood of getting hassle. Whilst there are shootings and stabbings up in Hackney, it only really affects those people associated with the gangs or those wandering around estates at 2.00 am. Unlike Gravey, where you have a very high risk of getting into a scuffle with one of many drunken clones with a small town mentality that they have to prove themselves as someone a bit tasty to their equally braindead mates.

Having been in a Dartford based gang back in my prime (IVS) …. I have to say, i have handled guns, knifes, battons – you name it – ive had it go past me.

The one time, about 3 months ago I got started on by 2 boys near the prom, cos I was wearing skinny jeans so they decided i was a “faggot” And decided to get in my face. I calmly said “please go away before you get hurt”. They didnt, and one of them took a swing for me. I walked off unhurt, should check the person you are starting on isnt a black belt in 8 Judos next time mateeeee
apart from that 1 incident, I never had any problems in Gravesend town. or even the rural “rough” areas like Kings Farm/Denton. It’s all hearsay.
If you expect a problem, then you’ll get one love. otherwise stop putting a bad name on Gravesend just cos you aren’t socially acceptable.

I lived in Gravesend from 2002 to 2005 and still visit the friends I made in the town. I’ve never experienced any of this and I’m not exactly the most conventional looking of people.

darling i have lived in gravesend all my life. I have never been threatened, i go out at night BY MYSELF, I dont carry knifes im just an ordanary 16 year old. TBH i know alot of people around Gravesend so that might help and i am a girly girl so i get on with loads of people. Ive never seen any of my mates threaten someone, spit, shank someone and i have been there a while. Sorry that they do this to you but sometimes you have to change who you are to fit where you live!
To be fair its wrong to change your self just because where you live, you should have freedom and be allowed to go were you want.
You have my greatest sympathies too, love. You and your friends should go and visit Sweden sometime. I went there to write an article last week and wow! the amount of alternative people! The rest care about the highest fashion and are friendly, quiet and modest. So if you ever want to get a break, you know where to go.
I moved to Gravesend 2 years ago and ever since it feels as a complete mess. I hate it. I hate the noisy neighbours, the constant glaring you get from people, the unfriendliness and the shouting. I hate having to deal with them every hour of the day and constantly feel like youre an unwanted outcast. But rather an outcast than anything like them. But still… it’s not nice to not know anyone in the area.
