Years and years and years ago – in the 1960s, the local council realised that Liverpool was getting overcrowded with people and subsequently picked a random few acres of bog land and fields to build a new town on….ladies and gentlemen…welcome to Kirkby!
WHERE IS IT?
Four or five miles North East of Liverpool, just off the infamous East Lancs Road.
WHATS THERE?
Crime ridden shit hole areas such as Westvale, Northwood, Tower Hill and Southdene…and the “posh part” Melling.
THE TOWN CENTRE (KNOWN AS THE TOWNIE)
Think of hundreds and hundreds of rough-arse housing estates surrounding a rough arse town centre and your getting close. Kirkby has it all, Knowsley College where platoons of 11year old scallies roam around thinking their hard because they wear rigger boots and have shitty overalls, millions of orange-faced, PJ wearing single mums with fags hanging from their lips whilst little Chantelle and Tyler clutch a cold pasty from Greggs!
In the shopping centre, bone-idle scallies sit on the benches sporting Lacoste tracksuits and the obligatory black Reebok “whats happinin kidda” “is right lad” “innit lad” Doberman and Staffs are an optional extra.
The town centre is blessed with several drinking establishments – notably Wetherspoons where the same `faces` have been drinking everyday from 10am since 1999 when it opened. Same seats every day, no variation – a quick trip the bookies, back for a pint of mild, back the bookies “Pint of John Smiths girl”
Fat-necked gobshites in white t-shirts and black cardigans play the fruit machines intently – only stopping to barge outside to answer there £400 mobile phones, “lad, yeah lad, is right lad, bang on lad, in a bit lad”
4pm is college letting out time – mayhem at the bus station where people trample each other to board buses “der’s a fookin queue here girl” – “ay lad canna ger on with a pram on da bus” “do you go down park brow lad”
Oddly, they say people from Kirkby love the place – famous residents like Margie Clark, Phil Thompson and the like swear by it…..
Funny really, the rest of us hate it.

I have read all the comments, and to be honest there are places you described all over uk. I have lived in Kirkby for 13 years now, it is the best place I have lived, I run a business from Kirkby, had 600 guest, and they all commented on how friendly and pleasant the Kirkby people are. One of my guests was a 70 year old man he was from Malaysia. He went to Kirkby Campus 50 years ago, and He came back for one more time to see Kirkby, He said although he is Malaysian. His heart is in Kirkby .
Another guest of mine, was from Scotland, he went out one night and got that drunk. He got a Kirkby taxi to get him back to our B&B, and the next day he realised that he had lost his wallet. it had £500 in it. He had to go home early that day, he phoned the police, and they said that the taxi driver had handed the wallet in, and all his money was in it, What more can I say.
one more story. I had five People coming to stay from Australia, and they booked in to our B&B. they were then told by a friend of theirs who lives in Maghull Don’t go there it is rough . they were worried as they had already booked in. They could not believe how lovely and nice it was in Kirkby. They have been back every year.
I just think that some people on here have lots of issues.

I was born and bread in kirkby in the late sixties(northwood) to be precise and i have a load of happy memories about living there.Moved out in 2006 mainly because of some of the comments ive read on here,negative yes but i,d say 70% true.I know a lot of use say its the same in every town but where i lived i was slowly but surely beginning to hate the place,this is from someone who,s lived there for over 35 years.In my opinion kirkby (northwood) started going down hill in the 90,s. mainly because i could see it for my self.The only time i liked walking round was the morning time after that had to put my game face on.Spinney woods is not a shit hole ,wish i cud afford to live there.Live in nogsynow they shoot u there or blow ur car up if u diss some kid .NOW this is a bad place.
These comments made me laugh….I am a service engineer for BG and have been working around merseyside for over 23 years so I think I have a good knowledge of the areas and believe me I have seen everything from total poverty to prosperity and can tell you although Kirkby does not come into the prosperity bracket is it by no means the worst place I have worked in… there are some shit holes in merseyside but I dont think its fair to point them out as it may offend the poeple who live there but I do look for the posotives….so in my job I see investment or the lack of it and Kirkby has been pulled up by the boots and when the town centre gets regenerated it will look good , also I deal with customers every day and find the Kirkby, Huyton, croxteth, walton and bootle folk really pleasant and always offer a cup of tea/coffee …..as I said though I always look for the posotive because I am a posotive person….but if you look for the negative go anywhere in the country and you WILL find it
My whole family were born and bred in Northwood kirkby. We had the same obstacles as everyone else. With hard working and decent minded parents, encouragement from very good teachers, (St Kevins and St Gregorys). Through hard work , honesty, determination and help from the wonderful people of Kirkby we all grew and became good citizens. We have all managed to surround our selves with some of the finest friends the country could offer. Maybe some folk tend to avoid the goodness in people and only look for the badness in people, Its a shame they cant see there are a thousands of good people in kirkby to every bad one. I have travelled the world and theres no were like the people from Kirkby.
i know what ur saying i came from the same background most of my mates did aswell but unless u live in a bubble or u drive around everywhere u wont see nothing ,if i went the shop in the evening the amount of shit i,d get of gangs every 200 yds or so,as i said im a big lad (16st and 6ft) and they dont give a shit,no respect ,so it was either batter a 14 year old or look ahead to cross over the road.I only noticed this more 90,s and defo 00,s.Dont know if its changed,doubt it.Isnt the level of people on the dole 18-60 in kirkby one of the highest in the uk.

I was born and raised in Huyton, when it was Huyton-with-Roby. Not a bad post-WW2 place to live and grow up. When the Communist-bastard Harold Wilson’s Labour took control, Huyton was transformed into a complete welfare state. One day, my Dad announced we were getting out of the UK and the family immigrated to Australia. I was fourteen years old. Since then I have lived in New Zealand and Canada until settling in California. I have only returned to Liverpool once since leaving and it was still a depressing dump, only much worse than I remembered. If I could offer one piece of advice to the young people, I would tell them to get out while they can. Run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit and never look back. Anywhere on Earth you end up is still going to be a far better life than what you’ll have if you stay.

My Dad is from Kirkby and he is one of the finest, most honest, hard working, kindest men you could ever meet. I was lucky enough to live in a decent area and attend grammar school because of his hard work. I used to enjoy visiting Kirkby with my Nana as a kid, albeit a long, long time ago. My Dad would be first to admit it was a bit of a craphole though! Reading through some of them replies has made me laugh, I’ve lived in Kirkby all my life and have just finished Sixthform with three A Levels and am now in Uni doing a four year degree. Kirkby does have its fare share of divys and scroungers but so does everywhere else in England, whoever wrote this “review” is clearly stuck up there own arse!

When i did live “at home” I NEVER experienced any problems whatsoever either from so called gangs, sock robbers, thief’s, drug addicts, scallys or any other such low life spoken about on here by lots of small, narrow minded and pretend refined folk!
I still go to the “towny” every week and love it. Kirkby as far as I’m concerned is full of hard working, friendly and kind people.

the sock robbers term from what i can remember is burgulars (house robbers) used to rob them off peoples washing lines so they wouldnt leave fingerprints,ingenious hey! only in kirkby.I think that goes back to the 60,s.So thats why theres more socks sold in kirkby market than anything else .

I was brought up in Ormskirk and my wife grew up in Kirkby and when we decided to gat married and bring up kids we decided on Shevington park on a new housing estate in Kirkby. I had only heard bad things about the place but that is the press isnt it and when we seen all the major developers building new homes there you know that if the smart money is being invested there then its a good buy, been here four years now and I love it ,great neighbors and great field opposite for the kids to play on..yes there are some lowlife around but where hasnt
I grew up in a so called posh part of south liverpool and moved to kirkby 3 years ago. Yes there are many unemployed patrons of the town centre ale houses who have turned claiming benefits into an art, but since I have lived here I have had no trouble at all. I can walk alone at night feeling safe, I say hello to youngters and they politely acknowledge… I like it here. I am sure kirkby isa home to a significant number of criminals, but crime within the town is evidently pretty low.

I used to live in Walton near goodison in a 1900 terrace with a alleygate which was locked because all the lowlife descended there and thefts was rife and when I left the house for work every morning I used to play dodge the dog shit to get to my car, I swear all of liverpool bring the dogs to the street around there to shit of a night and empty binbags eevrywhere, anyway when I got to my car which was vandalised about once every two months I could not wait to get away, Then three years we decided we did not want to bring up my two sons in this enviroment and decided to move and after looking at various places we decided between Croxtheth park or Kirkby and visited the places night and day ,weekday and weekends and one evening went to croxteth park and saw about 200 kids hanging around the shops causing problems so we then decided on Kirkby on the new house on the old bracknell ave school …paid 240k and I must say it is the best thing I have done, nice place, nice neighbors, large gardens , garage and drive way for 3 cars and no dog shit in sight…yes there are morons there but it it the same everywhere

Kirkby (NOT KIRBY) is full of hard working families and yes it does have an element of youth disorder but every town has that.
Whoever wrote the article is ill informed, Kirkby has a very high educational success rate and its schools are amongst the highest in Britain.
The pregnancy under 18 rate is lower that most towns in the uk, so before reviewing this hard working town please get your facts right and leave your name .

Thats Bullshit, in fact there is only one school since 1982 that has ever met educational targets (and that was not every year) which was Maricourt. Oh and that was beacause it was a selective school! the three major senior schools in kirkby, All saints, Roughwood and Brookfield all have terrible records with targeted results, so much so in fact that there was a revised testing system for the southern knowsley area with greatly reduced targets and much easier questions! Also, Oh yeah one more thing! what other town in liverpool…. in fact what other town anywhere would get rid of an educational chartitable institute who brought learning and enlightenment (not religious) aswell as NVQ training absolutely free, (Oh also this charity generated more than its own running cost required and gave more back to the area than it took to run) it was dissolved solely for the reason that parents were not comfortable with their children learning outside of school.
