With the historically dangerous Woodcock road estate in the south of North Norwich, the ‘gray’ area of Mile Cross’s Semen Towers next door, and the Chav estate that is Ives Road to the north, anyone wanting to live privately in this area avoiding such lovelies as bony-white-faced drudged up shits, should look elsewhere. Anything goes here, from large scale steal thefts from local business [1], to the thieves and ASBO junkies in Ives Road Pennyroyal [2], and domestic violence ringing out at night in the Woodcock estate.
Police are a rarity unless you have an overdue parking ticket. I rented a property in this area for 8 months and made a list of my observations for the record.
* Loud music
* Youths milling about
* Adults drinking in the streets
* Drunk revelers
* Fights
* People milling about in the shadows
* Never ending DIY
* Skivers from school
* The workshy and aimless
* Bullying and racism openly in the street
* Shouting, swearing in the street
* Quiet families forced out
* Rubbish in gardens
* My bike stolen
* My parcels stolen
* Aggressive driving
* Garden trespass
* Dogs barking at night and running wild
* Late night parties
* Fireworks off season
* Noisy kids
* Children crying their way to school
* Cats howling for hunger
* Drugged up manic adults
* Openly smoking cannabis
* Wife beating in street
* Domestic arguments
The Norfolk Constabulary website profiles Norwich north and the surrounding estates which summarizes just nicely.
“There are areas within the Mile Cross, Catton and Fiddlewood (Ives Road) neighbourhood that are amongst the most deprived in England and, as with any urban area, there are a number of policing challenges. With the large amount of people living in the area there are a number of issues including drug misuse, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.”
See you on the street corner!

Look…. your living in MILE X what do you expect it is one of the main council estates so its gna be a bit rough! and crime comes with deprovation! The rest of Norfolk is lovely and crime is few and far between! That I can assure you! I have mooved to Manchester! I tell you what Norwich is like heaven compared to here!…. Stabbings shootings daylight robbery on a daily basis… Do you see that in Norwich do you hell! Yeah weve had 3 occasions of knife crime in the last 3 or 4 years big whoop… Other cities face it daily! Dont like it go live somewhere else and stop wining! Your in a decent part of the country! YOu can ;eave ur cd players sat navs parrots and mobiles on display with the car door wide open and 9/10 times you come back it will still be there! Manchester you have to hide things out of sight!! I THINK NORFOLK FOLK HAVE IT EASY! And I cannot wait to return!!!!!
My time spent in Norwich hasn’t been that bad so far. Except for one inbred chav loser from the flats in Northfields who thinks i’m a “freak” for being tall and slim, wearing decent clothes and having two degrees and a beautiful girlfriend. f**king tosser even yelled racist abuse at her once. Sometimes i wish the UK was more like the Old West so i could beat his fat ass or shoot him without being arrested
I have lived in Norwich all my life, and Sprowston for 5 years. I have never been around Mile Cross, or the Larkman estate (is that dereham road) but I’ve heard some nasty stories about the Heartsease Estate, which I go past on my way to school, and I see the Open Academy (just the crappy Heartsease High School with a pretty face) and the three tower blocks, and I thought that that was Norwich’s only flawed area. What I’ve heard about Woodcock is bulls***, If I am right in thinking, Woodcock Road is a nice place, in Thorpe St Andrew, and North Norwich is one of the best places in Norwich (NR7/NR6) to live. Some of the chavvy little kids at my school think that they are hard because they come from the NR5 area, which is Bowthorpe and West Earlham. True, West Earlham has been known for some nicking, but Norwich is a very good place to live, and a cannot understand how these people are talking about some areas (that have some deprivation) like it’s bloody Peckham. The rougher places in my mind are the Edselle street area which is known for much graffiting, some crime and the entire place looks neglected, with the long since attractive Anglia Square, which is a little seedy, and that large office block which is completley abandoned.
You lot wouldn’t know what it’s like to be poor, or hungry, or shat on at every available moment of the day. I don’t care what you consider to be poor, or have a shit time in some “chav” place. You people make me sick. I have no time for people who complain about a particular aspect or some-thing bad that happened to them when they were living or just passing through a city they had small narrow-minded views about. If you don’t like it, f**k off, or do some-thing about it. Don’t come on to this site and pretend to be all macho just because you think no-one knows who you are. ( there are ways ).
No offence, but ive lived in norwich for 16 years now, I Barely see crime, i sometimes hear the odd drunk after a night at the pub, and seriously this is pathetic, you make it seem like daggenham or something? Norwich is a fair place to live, I used to always see my freinds in larkmen and never got into shit there? plus i live right next to Plumbstead and Heartseas, So basically all this is shit, norwich aint shit compared to liverpool or some places in london.
From my experience of living in Norwich( I lived there from 11982 until 2008) I absolutely hated it. The people I encountered, both in work and socially , were on the whole coarse, inarticulate, and lazy. I witnessed children as young as 6 or 7 smoking and on a number of occasions ,whilst shopping at Tesco’s , it was a common sight to see them stealing foodstuffs and sweets and their parents tended to turn a blind eye to their activities. I reported their stealing to staff at the store and as a result was singled out for a torrent of verbal abuse and had the windows at my flat smashed on 3 occasions. In April of 2008 I had had enough and decided to leave the area. Norwich is a city that should be avoided like the plague. The people are scum and no decent person would be seen dead there. Leaving Norwich was the best move I ever made.
George Tolton Says: “The people I encountered, both in work and socially , were on the whole coarse, inarticulate, and lazy.”
I say: George Tolton should learn to correctly punctuate his sentences before making such swathing and inaccurate generalisations about a whole city. Scumbags can be found everywhere and Norwich is no different. I’ve lived in Sheffield, Norwich, Long Stratton (Norfolk town), Hempnall (Norfolk village), Cheveleey (Newmarket) and La Tania (France). I went to college and University in Norwich. I have also travelled in Europe and Turkey. There are scumbags the world over but I see no distinction between “Norwich” scubags or, I don’t know, “French” scumbags for instance. If you look at the whole of Norwich as a city, it has far fewer people living in deprived areas than most cities that I’ve visited. I’m not about to start criticising or naming other cities that I know to be much worse because the well adjusted and hard working majority of people who live there will inevitably and quite rightly be offended at such generalisations. Scumbags are a direct consequence of deprivation and a certain proportion of the population in any given area will be scummy. This should scale with the size of population and since Norwich is a relatively tiny city, it’s population of scumbags is a lot lower than many other British cities. Because very wealthy people can pay accountants to protect their assets from inheritance tax and tend to have fewer children than less affluent people (who have only debts to leave behind) the poor will continue to get poorer and the rich richer. I guess what I’m saying is that irrespective of location, you can’t blame the chavs for being born into the circumstances that allowed them to grow up ferral and uneducated because this is beyond their control. If you’re so much more intelligent, educated, articulate, refined etc. then you will have no problem making a better life for yourself in a better part of town. Norwich is a fine city and the home of the longest running arts festival in Europe. It is the home of many very wealthy and successful people and has a large student population. I recommend it as a safe and pleasant place to live, work or study. Like anywhere, if you hang around in the worst part of town, you are not going to be greeted with how-do-you-do’s and gifts of fois gras and Champagne, especially not if you look out-of-place and/or grass-up the local kids for stealing a few sweets in a shop (George). Don’t hate poor people. Hate poverty. Better still, give up some of your free time or money to help charities that will improve the life chances of those born into poverty so the next generation are less ‘chavvy’ than their parents. Just bloody cheer up people or you’ll waste your lives being pissed off!

Thank you, Sir.
I used to live in pennyroyal and woodcock and yes it is a dump with shit yobs and even adult fuckers roaming about. all day long. Norwich airport is close by so perhaps they should crash a plane in there and start the estate again!
I can’t believe you’ve mentioned all these dumps but not included that huge shit hole that is Great Yarmouth, what a f**king irony that name is. The local tracksuit wearing cunts like to call themselves ‘Yarkos’ or just plain ‘Yarks’. As you’re going there, along the Caister bypass, you can smell the shit wafting over from the local sewage plant, it’s f**king disgusting.
Diego! You sum up Yarmouth beautifully, your words brought a tear to my eye. I also wonder why Gurt Yarmouth isnt represented in its own right?
I live in North Norwich and like it very much, we had an incidence of antisocial behaviour and loud music once, nipped in the bud when the front door was kicked in and the stereo smashed with a bat. I have noticed that any man who is able to stand upright (when not slumped on a couch, scratching his nuts) is a right catch for the ladies here, and will literally be passed from one domestic scenario to the next over time, like a slightly shopworn pet. Eventually, having made attempts to seal-the-deals through various impregnations they settle with the least fussy, fattest, most foul-mouthed and friskiest of the ladies. Its a living.
It has nothing to do with being brought up in some fantasy utopia, its about doing what you can to make your own and others lives better, the braindead cannot see that and will continue to live their scummy little existences to the detriment of all that come into contact with them, tell you what Tristan, you wallow in your filth but please allow the rest of us point you out to our children and warn them mixing with your like.
same shit as any other big town city even villages can be rough but if you around when youre young its part of life, those that have the privallge of growing up in some soft furnished eutopia should be glad they didnt have to live in this place before and should leave as soon as possilble.
every time i read about outsiders running down mile x i wonder WHO they are, i mean ive lived in norwich for years and years and always hang around mile x and yes you do get the odd bit of squit like anywhere else in the world….but nothing like many would have you believe! in fact i dont think there is such a thing as a rough area in norwich….not even the larkman is that bad if you keep your head down, i always used to hang around there and the worst thing that ever happened to me there was getting in a scuffle with a teenager (who was all mouth anyway.)
try living in liverpool (basically, anywhere outside city centre) if you want a “nice” area to live in.
Well Stan, here is an update on life for you.
These posts are aimed directly at people just like yourself, the thick, uneducated, feral scum and chav creatures that you so proudly claim to have hung around with, your answer is “to keep your head down”
I, like millions of my fellow citizens, have served my country, worked and paid my taxes when I left the Forces, obeyed the law of the land and brought up my children to do likewise, and some uneducated little f**king scumbag informs me that I should “keep my head down” and you wonder who these “outsiders” are that are running down the area that you have helped turn into a shitpile? we are law abiding citizens Stan, that’s who we are.
And just who the f**k are you to tell anyone to try living elsewhere? People like you have no place in civilised society, you are worthless, your idea of achieving something is to steal it, if you cannot steal it then ruin it for everyone else.
You f**king w**ker.
listen here matey, you don’t even know me. perhaps you should ask a few questions before coming out with SHIT like this??? i work and pay taxes. i don’t have a criminal record of any sort. most of my family have degrees. but that doesn’t stop me from hanging around all over norwich and have a chat and a laugh with whoever, i give anyone the time of day unless they don’t show enough respect….oh, and by keeping my head down i mean to keep low profile don’t think you’re something special and don’t speak unless spoken to, and as we say round here, you’l be sorted.
oh, and i’ve lived in liverpool and i can say that if you think norwich is bad try living there, area like seaforth, bootle, litherland and so forth…all them make the larkman seem like a walk in the park.
I have to say iv not really seen any of these problems. I’m not in town very often though!
