Having grown up in this town, I can supply you with a fair account on the sad state of it today.
Rugby, as a town, is hardly a patch on how it apparently once was. Today, it’s filled with most of the filth ruining this country. If you can name it, Rugby Town has it. Spend a day in the town centre and you will experience it all. The sight of single teenage mothers, so called chavs and similar monstrosities is not uncommon, I can assure you. Be sure to avoid some areas of the town. In fact, make that most areas. No matter where you go, there are good and bad people. With the current reccesion, nothing has improved in Rugby at all, but I wouldn’t say it’s degraded further in the past ten years.
The majority of the news reported in our local newspapers, the Observer and the Advertiser, is generally bad. Drugs raids, murders, rape and other crimes are not a rare sight, and generally, these overshadow the better, nicer things that happen in the town. Speaking of crime, Rugby Police are hardly helpful if you are in trouble, and the bid officers, known locally as the Power Rangers, are laughed at by most of the town’s youth.
All in all, whilst it may have been a nice place 50 or so years ago, today it is hit and miss. In a way, much like modern day Britain.
If you have anything to say on my words, good or bad, please leave a comment below.
im not sure you live in the same rugby as me. firstly the power rangers are the town rangers and the are minly cleaners. i didnt know that at an glace you can assume sn moter with a baby is single mothers. i go up town oftern and nothing hasever happend at all. also crime is not tha frequent andte insults to the police? i tink you the scum of the town. afteri walk home from church (hilmortan to bilton) nothing is bad. the grass is always greener
I think Rugby gets a worse reputation than it deserves, especially in Warwickshire. It grew up mainly as an industrial town in the 19th century, and like most industrialised towns it’s generally a bit poorer than other areas, like Warwick, Leamington and Stratford for example. It also lost a lot of it’s industry in the 90s and therefore suffered high unemployment levels. But I’ve visited Rugby numerous times, and I think it’s just as nice as Leamington; most people there are friendly, and just because it’s not as wealthy as some other towns doesn’t make it any less attractive. I know crime levels might appear to be high, but like most of England and Wales crime has been decreasing since the 80s, and in 2011 Rugby’s crime rate was lower than the national average.
It really sums up the unpleasant side of Britain when someone goes to the trouble of setting up a website and posting malicious drivel about places and people they know nothing about. Britain has many poor areas and also many well-off – the environment you’re brought up in and the opportunities you have can, and often do, have an impact on the type of person you grow up to be. Call someone a “chav” and treat them like some sort of underclass and they’ll no doubt behave like that. What a sorry state we’re in if we think it’s acceptable to label people who haven’t been given the same opportunities as the rest of us.
While I don’t like seeing antisocial behaviour I find people who make themselves feel better by looking down their noses at the people committing the antisocial acts even worse. How do you think it helps people with no money, opportunity, education, jobs etc.. by setting up websites laughing about how awful they are?
And – with regards to Rugby, it’s a wonderful little town with a full spectrum of people living here and that can only be a good thing – variety is what it’s all about after all. Sure the town is suffering at the moment with empty shops but so are so many other towns in the country. Some of the architecture in the town is stunning and there’s plenty to do if you keep your eyes and ears open. It’s a fantastic place to bring up children with beautiful countryside 10 minutes away and brilliant schools. It’s also bang in the middle of the country so makes accessing the rest of England easy. I moved back here after living in London for 15 years and the quality of life here is exceptional.
One other thing – for a website that prides itself on looking down on the unwashed, ill-educated underclass of Britain, I have to say the command of English displayed by most people posting on this site is astonishingly poor. I can only conclude that the majority of people using this site really aren’t very clever; making posts about “chavs” to feel better about their own failings and stupidity.
i disagree with most of what your saying, generally its just really boring
What do you know about Rugby?bet you dont even know what a scrum is!
I am from Coventry, but moved to Rugby after a stint elsewhere & Rugby is now where i remain. As someone who goes into town daily (btw, i’m in a stable relationship, with young children, with 2 posh cars & a job earning great money which is home based working for a large corporate firm so i’m far from what you describe above) i can confirm that the town centre is pretty much empty. If you go at certain times of the day e.g. school throwing out time & weekends, it is full of foul mouthed youths…but go down the park & u’ll see lots more. The rest of the day, i can honestly say i rarely see a chav in sight. And single teenage mums…where? Unless as a younger looking lady who thankfully kept hold of her youthful looks so still gets asked for ID at nearly 30 is what you are mistakenly referring to? If you want teenage mums, i’ll introduce you to Coventry!
I never wanted to move to Rugby. I was a Cov girl & thought Rugby was too posh & boring, but apart from it living up to it’s boring reputation, it’s certainly not as bad as some places i’ve lived. Not as good as i’d heard (i’d opted for Rugby as a cheaper alternative to Leamington), but not bad. No crimes that you speak of in my street with the exception of someone having a fight with their sister once in the last 10 years…i called the police & they stayed on the phone till police arrived 2 mins later (and i apparently live in a rundown area!). Admittedly my street does have lots of council rented houses, but no problems. However I do agree that it can be hit and miss…walk right out of my house & it’s all great, walk left & it’s got that scary vibe. Nothing happens, it just looks like it might.
I’ve left laptops accidentally on my doorstep, left my cars open and noone took the bait.
PS…didn’t know they were called Power Rangers, but i know exactly what people you are talking about. I love that nickname. Might start using it myself
Overall, i’m not sure it is as bad as ur brief comment suggests, however i agree with most of it to a degree. Your last part of the comment somes it up well for me.
