Sutton

The other reviews about Sutton seem to have been written by teenagers who have had poor personal experiences of living in Sutton- they have not given a true and fair idea of what the place is actually like; quite the reverse! In fact, it is generally a very pleasant town within Greater London on the edge of Surrey, about ten miles from the centre of London. It has very low crime levels compared with most areas of London, with serious crime very low – in fact, out of the 33 London boroughs, only two have better (i.e. lower) crime figures. The only concern of any significance is low-level disorderly conduct, and this maybe what the other reviews are picking up on. However, the reality is that this is a well established middle-class suburb, within easy commuting distance of the city.  The main High Street has many up-market shops, bars and restaurants such as a really nice branch of Waterstones,  the UK’s first ever All Bar One and a branch of a small chain of four really good French restaurants run by the celebrity chef, Malcolm John – it’s called Brasserie Vacherin. Also the area is home to some of the best grammar schools in Britain, including Sutton Grammar School for Boys and Wilson’s. Last but not least, culture- vultures will be pleased about the two theatres, the Secombe centre in the centre of town and the Charles Cryer theatre in neighbouring village, Carshalton, a mile down the road. All in all, a very pleasant spot and well worth moving to!

I have lived in Sutton for something in the region of 6 years. I can see both sides of the equation, on the one hand it certainly isnt as nice a place as it used to be, just in those 6 years I have found myself much more aware of the people around me if I find myself in the high street at night and although I personally haven’t had any problems with crime I know more than a couple of people who have.

That said, you do have the undeniable advantage of living near a station with direct trains to Victoria and London Bridge, the public transport in general is brilliant, with buses running 24h and trains running every 15 minutes or so. The town centre does have some nice shops despite what one of the responses suggests, basically as long as you stay nearer the top of the high street/ St. Nicholas’ Centre/ Times Square then it can be a good place to pick up a few things.

In general I think it’s an OK place to live and certainly for the proximity to London and ease of access, it’s brilliant.

Sutton is a confused place, it wants to be a nice quiet suburban town a la Surbiton, but it aint. There isn’t nythingg much more depressing than wandering down the high st on a drissly busy Saturday, navigating past the surly chavs, fat bolshy towling trackie wearing siungle mums, the latest addition to the fold – chuggers and general sub working class scum. I’m 38 and grew up in Sutton (despite moving overseas and Balham, I’ve had to return due to owning a flat here) and its definitely getting worse, I don’t buy the statistics of it being one of the lowest crime areas in London, that’s like comparing cat shit with dog shit, both are shit, its just one smells a bit more. And as for All Bar One being the pinacle of Sutton’s achievement, please feel free to visit on a Saturday night, its like a Right Said Fred convention, full of fat steroidy 40+ divorced chav scaffolders looking for a shag, grim, very grim.

I have lived in the London Borough of Sutton on and off and it is not really much different to what you see in mainstream Southern England.

You walk around the high street of Sutton and it is full of working class people. You can tell that from the way the people are dressed, the way they look (unhealthy) and the cockyney speech mannerisms.

From what I can see the majority of England is like Sutton. I have lived in various parts of London and the South of England, the areas that do not conform to the similarities of Sutton are in the minority. The likes of Clapham, Kensington or even Horsham ae not that common types of places one sees.

THE HIGH STREET HAS MAY UP-MARKET SHOPS?!?!?

This is the msot ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard – if Argos, ASDA and computer exchange are up-market – you are spot on.

Or sorry did I miss House of Fraser, the Mercedes showroom, Bang & Olufsen and the Apple store on the way past the pawnbrokers and loan shop with the fake HSBC sign with the bloke dressed as a wizard standing outside and skanky “market” selling spice girls t-shirts?

The high street is full of leather-faced working class filth – its so in-bred there are hardly any ethnics, its like a nazi vision of a pure-bred race except its all the defective genes that have been passed on. If you vote BNP – sutton is your eldorado.

Culture vultures in carshalton/sutton? – sorry the previous poster obviously works for the local council…pretty much like everyone else in the area.

I lived in Sutton for about 8 years.

There is a big divide. South Sutton is a great place to live, nice streets, good parks and with some stunning streets with luxury housing.

However, the opposite end of Sutton you have CHAV hell with Benhill Estate, and Rosehill. Overall, I never had a problem with Sutton. Yes the High St. would be lively after a night of people drinking but also a lot of people from surrounding towns came to Sutton for a night out due its bars, so not every chav or trouble maker came from Sutton.
