An even more inbred place is the village of High Cross, just a few minutes down the road from Ware, which makes even the roughest council estates look pleasant by comparison (this comes from someone who has lived in Greenstead, Colchester and Sele Farm, Hertford). Plague victims were brought to this depressing place to die and it is believed Thomas Clarkson decided to become an abolitionist after witnessing the way High Cross’s men treated their wives and daughters. Fortunately, the council had the wisdom to build a bypass so decent people can avoid this shit-hole.
As there’s not much to do, the lads of Poplar Close spend most of the time intimidating people, smoking, drinking cheap and nasty lager, or downloading kiddie porn. Most of these scumbags were kicked out of school and are hostile to anyone deemed an “outsider” (basically people who succeed in life, i.e. attend a school other than Chauncy).
